Way back when Spencer Campbell (GilaRPGs) was first designing his solo souls-like RPG, RUNE, I knew straight away that I wanted to write new content for it. Realms, weapons, enemies; the works.

But what makes a weapon strong or weak? At what point does a piece of gear become too strong?

Welcome to RUNE: Vitalforge.

If you’re a designer looking to create new content for other players to use, such as a Realm or other add-on, consider Vitalforge your companion to building Gear that feels useful, while still maintaining the sense of challenge at the heart of RUNE.

RUNE: Vitalforge contains:

  • Ruminations on balance and power level in RUNE
  • Tips for balancing your own creations
  • A formulaic approach to designing brand new weapons
  • Advice for creating formidable enemies and challenging encounters

If you find Vitalforge helpful, be sure to let me know! I can’t wait to see what awesome creations you come up with!

Thanks for putting this together, Aaron! Great to a have a well-reasoned starting place.

FYI, I noticed a discrepancy while reading. On p.13 when discussing versatile weapons, you explain that they have a point budget of Rune Level + 6. However, in your example build of the versatile Claymore, you use a budget of Rune Level + 5. Which number more accurately reflects your intention?

Thanks for letting me know! I went back and forth on numbers for a while, and admittedly I don't remember what I eventually settled on for the final version, but I'm going to trust that my past self used the correct value for the actual building exercise and that the +6 was just an oversight from a previous iteration.

So, it should be Rune Level + 5! I've posted an updated version with that discrepancy corrected.

I really liked the system for creating weapons.

i'm glad it could be helpful!
